Deal with Red Wine and Coffee Spills on Carpets
There are many ways to get rid of the nasty red wine and coffee spills on your carpets – some of them are professional, others require just simple homemade detergents and a lot of rubbing. In all cases – try to clean the spot as soon as it appears and don’t let it soak deep into the base of the fibres. Red wine especially leaves a very pronounced soiled area and an unpleasant odour. That’s why you want to clean the spots from spills or that fallen glass of red wine as soon as possible, and the best way to do it is to use a homemade detergent for carpet cleaning. Just make sure that you mix the right ingredients in order to prevent discoloration or other unexpected issues with your rugs and carpets. Some natural rugs or hand-knit carpets with a natural coloration are very sensitive to rug cleaning compounds, even when these are just white vinegar and baking soda. First, try the detergent on a small area, for example in the corner of the carpet. Next are the perfect detergents for every special case, which you can easily make at home. These detergents will help clean some of the most persistent spots – red wine spills and coffee stains.
1 – Red wine spills are harder to clean, because they contain a small amount of alcohol, which enhances the evaporation so you get a very little time margin for mixing the detergent and treating the spots. In all cases – it is much more recommended to clean the red wine off right after the spill than to leave it for tomorrow. For stain removal, you will need just hot water, baking soda, powder laundry detergent and dish detergent, mixed in a medium-sized bowl or in a bowl with the appropriate size, according to the stain. If you leave this task for the big domestic cleaning at the weekend then prep a larger bowl for more detergent. Get at least two clean towels too, as well as a sponge for dabbing and rubbing the stains. Indeed, the first thing that you want to do is to blot as much of the red wine as you can, but make sure to do it from the outer side of the spill to the centre, in order to avoid making a bigger mess. Repeat the procedure until you extract most of the liquid from the stain. Then, stir the ingredients for the detergent well until they form a thick paste, and apply that paste right onto the red wine spill. Rub and blot with the other clean cloth or with a sponge, then wipe off the dislodged stain until the spot becomes clean and slightly wet. Let it dry for a few hours and when it’s almost completely dry run the vacuum cleaner onto it to restore the carpet’s fluffiness.
2 – Coffee spills are sometimes trickier to clean, but with this homemade detergent, you can avoid calling in a team of professional carpet cleaners. It is a mix of hot water, rubbing alcohol, white vinegar and dishwashing detergent. This solution will dislodge the coffee spill and will make it easier to extract. Use only a soft clean cotton towel to dab and blot the stain with just clean water. That extracts the detergent and dirt leftovers. Continue dabbing with paper towels, which will extract even more of the liquid. When the spot looks clean and dry, run the vacuum cleaner again to restore the fluffiness of the carpet. If you worry too much about the unpleasant odour of the vinegar then add the juice of a lemon in the detergent or a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil, which will neutralize the odour of vinegar and coffee. This carpet cleaning technique will yield great results on coffee stains every time.
It is vital that you keep your carpets clean at all times as they contribute to the atmosphere in your home a great deal. Use these rug cleaning tricks and stains will no longer be an issue.
